OTHER FAMILY FORMATION SERVICES

We also provide legal services as follows:

Stepparent Adoptions

Legal representation for the petitioning parent in court.  Filing the petition, facilitating the termination of rights of the relinquishing parent.  Assisting the petitioner and natural parent in preparing the necessary supporting documents; requesting the assignment of a social worker and coordinating with said social worker who will investigate and submit a recommendation to the court; requesting the finalization hearing with the court.

Second Parent Adoptions

The process of adding an individual on the birth certificate of an adoptee wherein the adopting individual or petitioner is not legally married to the parent of the adoptee who is already on the birth certificate. We represent the adopting parent or petitioner by filing the petition, facilitating the advisement of rights of the parent retaining custody by an Adoption Service Provider, assisting the petitioner and natural parent in preparing the necessary supporting documents; requesting the assignment of a social worker to investigate and file a recommendation; and requesting the finalization hearing with the court.

Relative Adoptions

Adoptive parents who adopt children from family members fall in this category.  We represent the petitioning parent/s in court by filing the petition, facilitating the advisement of rights of the relinquishing birth parent/s, assisting the petitioner/s in preparing the necessary supporting documents; locating an Adoption Service Provider, if needed; requesting the assignment of a social worker; and setting the finalization hearing with the court.

Re-adoption of Children Adopted Internationally

Children adopted from countries outside of the United States must go through a “re-adoption” process in their home state which usually results in the issuance of a U.S. birth certificate by the State Department of Health.  We represent the petitioning parent/s in court by filing the petition, assisting the petitioners in preparing the necessary supporting documents; and requesting the finalization hearing with the court.

Adult Adoption

An adult may be legally adopted by another adult, whether or not the parties are related.  We assist both the petitioner and adoptee in preparing the necessary Adoption Petition  filed with the court which cites the reason behind the petitioner’s desire to adopt the adoptee, the adoptee’s desire to be adopted, and why the parties desire to establish a parent-child relationship.

Embryo Donation / Embryo Adoption

We represent either the party desiring to donate the embryos or the party adopting or receiving donated embryos by drafting an agreement to be signed by the parties to ensure that each party understands their rights and responsibilities as Donor or Recipient of the embryos. Both parties need to be represented by independent counsel.
